Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder characterized by the need to excessively consume food in a period of food consumption (binge eating/binging) without the desire to purge.
Diagnosis
In binge eating disorder, a patient will have recurrent episodes of binge eating without purges.
This is defined as, within 2 hour period, eating an amount of food that is definitely larger than what most people would eat in a similar period of time.
It must occur at least once a week for 3 months.
There are varying degrees of binge eating:
- Mild (1-3 per week), moderate (4-7), severe (8-13), extreme (14+ per week)
- Symptom: gaining weight (of course)
- Prevalent in both males and females, 1.6%
